About the Event
Across two days, Jonathan will lead instruction exploring beautiful and restrictive ties of Shibari/Kinbaku, combining these with core psychological ideas and physical organizational principles found in martial arts, yoga, and dance. Together, we’ll explore:
- Consent & Negotiation
- Restrictive Ties & Anatomy, including modifications and variations
- Partial & Full Suspension Forms (including safety considerations)
- Body to Body Movement & Manipulation
- Rope Handling Skills for Tying with Fluidity & Connection
- Aesthetics and Rope
Expect to spend the majority of class getting plenty of hands on practice in a friendly, non-competitive environment. This weekend is definitely appropriate for all genders, sexual orientations, and body types.
Students need to bring:Â
- (8-10) 26'-30' ropes (6mm)
- (2) 12'-15' ropes (6mm) Â [or (2) 8mm jute or hemp the the main suspension line] {2 POSH or Hempex are even bettter}
- (5-7) Pear-shaped or oval climbing carabiners. [must be rated for climbing]
- A blanket
- (Optional) Steal Suspension Ring, Climbing Swival
Tops should already be comfortable tying a structurally solid chest harness and structurally solid gote shibari (TK/box tie) in a timely and accurate fashion. They should also be comfortable with basic rope bondage techniques such as reliable, non-collapsing single column and double column ties, basic frictions and lock-offs, be competent in basic partial suspension line locking & management techniques, and have prior experience with partial suspension. They should have awareness of potential nerve compression issues associated with rope bondage, and be confident in communicating about them in an ongoing fashion with the rope bottom. Â Bottoms should be comfortable being tied, have prior experience with partial or full suspension, and be competent in monitoring themselves for nerve/circulation issues & communicating same to the rope top.
About the Presenter: Jonathan (Seattle Shibari) is an international rope artist who performs onstage, ties for art collaborations, and teaches the art of Shibari/Kinbaku worldwide. He has performed and presented for sold-out audiences in Europe, Japan, China, and the Americas. Traveling annually to Japan for continuing immersion in his own studies, he meshes a distinctive and constantly evolving blend of Western & Eastern aesthetics & perspectives in his interpretation of the art. He holds a high-level teaching license from his teacher Kinoko Hajime, and directs activities at the Portland Shibari Salon with his partner Sappho.
